Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Dealer | Mercedes-Benz of Elmbrook

Sprinter History by  Mercedes-Benz of Elmbrook

The Sprinter is designed by Daimler AG and sold as a Mercedes model. It is a vehicle that was constructed for commercial purposes. It is sold as a van, chassis cab, and minibus style, offering ample space for drivers to be able to transport workload items from one location to another. The first Sprinter released in the United States came out in 2001. This first generation VA chassis was sold by Freightliner. Other units sold to the rest of North America were labeled as Mercedes until 2004. In 2004 Dodge took over the branding. DaimlerChrysler Vans LLC launched the product and sold it. Eventually responsibilities involving sales, service, and parts transferred over to the Chrysler Commercial Vehicle Division the same year. DaimlerChrysler Vans LLC still supported the Sprinter in areas involving safety, engineering, and certification.

There needed to be some kind of answer to the older Dodge Ram Van, which was put out of production in 2003. The answer was the Sprinter. DaimlerChrysler's Sprinter was a fuel efficient alternative to the Dodge Ram Van, equipped with a tall roof and loads of space. For the next five years cargo van styles of the Sprinter were manufactured in Germany where they were partially broken down and then shipped off to a large facility in South Carolina where reassembly took place. If the cargo style Sprinters were imported as a whole unit, then a heavy tax would be put on it. However, by taking apart and reassembling the vehicle, this tax is avoided. All first generation US Sprinters had a Mercedes-Benz 2.7 liter straight five cylinder turbo diesel. The advantages of owning a Sprinter were very obvious in the commercial industry. There is plenty of cargo space for hauling, and the van itself typically can fit up to 8-10 people. Drivers of Sprinter vehicles are capable of being able to haul about 3000 pounds of cargo! These vehicles have become extremely popular in the delivery business. FedEX is a big customer of Sprinter style vehicles. The Sprinter also has advantages over the traditional North American van. Besides being small and more fuel efficient, they are less expensive to maintain compared to regular vans. In addition, the cargo bed area has added roof height, which in turn gives drivers and passengers a more comfortable area to rest. The Sprinter has also found a home in the RV business. Sprinter Camper Vans have cropped up all over the place, and these are perfect for families wanting to hit the road and take a long weekend out by the lake or campgrounds. Recently, Dodge lost the contract rights to sell Sprinters in the United States and Canada, so select Mercedes-Benz dealers have taken over that franchise domain.
